A study presented at the annual meeting of the European Association for the Study of Diabetes (EASD) in Stockholm revealed that individuals with Type 2 Diabetes (T2D) and an unhealthy lifestyle were more likely to develop dementia in comparison to individuals without T2D and a healthy lifestyle. The study showed that a healthy lifestyle reduces the risk of diabetic patients developing dementia by 50%.

Dr. Carlos C. Morales, of the University of Glasgow, stated that adhering to current dietary, physical activity, and sleep recommendations is the key to good health and can reduce the risk of dementia in people with diabetes. In the study, 4,45,364 participants were enrolled who were free of dementia at the start of the trial. Over a median period of 9.1 years, 33% of the participants who had T2D were more likely to develop dementia in comparison to individuals without T2D. The study also revealed that participants with the least healthy lifestyles were 65% more likely to develop dementia than their counterparts.

However, further analysis showed that a healthy lifestyle appeared to reduce the risk of dementia in those with T2D. Individuals with T2D following a healthy lifestyle were 65% less likely to develop dementia in comparison to diabetic individuals following an unhealthy lifestyle.
